Memory Upgrades for the 50xx (blackwell series)

With the official 5070/5080 SUPER announcement any information on upgrading the 5080s beyond the stock 16gb? If bios's do become available, will you guys do the upgrades? K4VAF325ZC-SC32 --> K4VCF325ZC-SC32 ?
 
yes we will but we have not seem valid evidence that these upgrades actually exist for blackwell yet

Hey, I'm here from watching Wendell's/Level1Techs' video. Do you need a bios that matches the memory configuration in order to make an upgrade work?

I'd be very keen to upgrade my 5090 to 64GB for better local LLM use. It's not a top-tier card, just a Gigabyte Windforce OC 32G specifically (the one that got a bad rep for the excess thermal putty) so I'd willing to experiment with it.

the vbios firmware signature bypass used on the 40xx series to enable this chip-select feature (clamshell mode) on the 40 series has not yet been cracked on the 50 series, though with AI tools im sure its around the corner if the 170hx unlock is anything to go by.

Edit: I see a ton of "5090 no core or vram, for parts only" sales on ebay, so I think someone must have cracked the vbios already. The seller's names are pretty much all Chinese so maybe they're stripping US-bought 5090s and sending/smuggling the chips back there, either to get around the 5090D export restriction and/or to do a memory upgrade.

So a few theories, the most likely is that they are all being converted to blower card 2-slot variants so they fit into servers and high density easily. second is that there could be a 64/96gb unlock for them BUT! none of the factories i work with in china who do what i do but in shenzhen regarding gpu production, have heard anything about the 50xx memory doubling, all its been is turbo conversions but its not economical here in the USA because we can get 6000 pro's without restriction

Ahh good point, making them blowers for multi-card in a high-end config makes sense. Okay. Bummer though. I guess I'll just wait and see. Thanks! 🙂
